Dybuk
Szymon An-ski “Dybuk” / a performance by the Stefan Jaracz Theater in Łódź
This Jewish writer, journalist and ethnographer (1863–1920) left behind a diverse literary legacy. Nonetheless, he is generally remembered as the author of a single play: “Dybuk.” The Dybuk (Heb. dibuk: “that which clings”) is, in Jewish folklore, the soul of deceased sinner who occupies the body of a living person and takes over his soul, condemned to eternal damnation. In “Dybuk,” this world and the next are equally real. This is a tale of metempsychosis, of fate that takes effect posthumously, and of love, which gives meaning to life, and which cannot be ignored without repercussions. Awarded the Gold Mask for best play in the 2009/10 season, “Dybuk” is directed by a famous artist of the stage and screen – Mariusz Grzegorzek.
