A Russian poet of Jewish extraction (1940–96). He was sent to prison for his poetry (or his “parasitical activities”). In 1972 he was stripped of his citizenship and expelled from the USSR. He immigrated to the USA. In 1987 he received the Nobel Prize for the universal value of the whole of his literary work, marked by a clarity of thought and a poetic vigor. His poetry combines philosophical reflection with a satirical take on social mores. One of the participants in this meeting devoted to Brodsky will be his friend of many years, Professor Zofia Ratajczak, who met the poet in the 1960s.
