Lech Dyblik, a famous character actor, first heard “blatnye pyesni” (prison and street songs, extremely popular in Russia and the Soviet Union) while in jail in Rostov-on-Don, where he spent a night, on account of his physical similarity to a certain swindler. It was with these songs that Vladimir Vysotsky, the great Russian bard, began his career. Each of these often anonymous songs is a tale of a wasted life, of longing, or of an unfaithful woman. They are also the voice of the people, expressing opposition to the government. One way of presenting them is singing on the streets, which Dyblik does.
